Sachtleben knows what's good for bees
Sachtleben Chemie of Duisburg provides bees with aids to navigation!
This is the time of year when beekeepers prepare their colonies' hives for spring outings. The entry holes on the hives are painted in colour to aid the busy honey-gatherers in their orientation after their homeward flight. Practically no one is aware that bees perceive light and colour differently to humans, however. This is why only special pigments harmonized with the bees' visual abilities, and paint materials ecological in every respect, are used in bee-keeping. Production of these special paints was recently discontinued. Jointly with AURO Naturfarben, Sachtleben Chemie is once again ensuring that, as of now, honey-bees can rely on their orientation.

Water Chemicals Users' Conference: Exchange of experience at
international level
At the invitation of Sachtleben's Water Chemicals division, international specialists
in the field of papermaking and water treatment have met in Hanover for a direct interchange of notes and experience.
Alongside a number of papers dealing with the use of polyaluminium-chloride-based flocculants, the focus of this
conference was, in particular, on users' reports on NICASAL. This Sachtleben innovation in flocculants, which is based on
a chloride-free aluminium nitrate sulfate, permits trouble-free use in corrosion-sensitive stainless-steel systems and, at
the same time, significantly improved flocculation properties.

Sachtleben aids van Gogh restorers.
Did van Gogh and Gauguin's canvas ground originate in Duisburg?
One of the many studies of sunflower painted by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) has for some time now
been undergoing a costly process of restoration in Amsterdam. The target of the international group of restorers is that
of reconstructing defects in the picture, using original materials to the greatest extent possible. Electron-microscope
images have now disclosed that both van Gogh and Gauguin (1848-1903) used an unusual combination of materials in the
essential basis for their paintings, the canvas ground, during their period of cooperation in Arles in 1888.
